Baltimore Academy of Illustration offers alternative path for artistsThe academy opened last summer. (Algerina Perna/Baltimore Sun) Caitlin Rose always wanted to be an illustrator, even when her career seemed determinedly pointed in a different direction. But thanks to a school that recently opened in north Baltimore, she feels she may finally be on the right track. “My love, all along, has been illustration,” says Rose, 31, who works as a note taker at the Maryland Institute College of Art and as a server at a city restaurant. “But I’d already gone to school, so it didn’t make sense to go back full time.” Instead, she enrolled in the fall in the inaugural semester of the Baltimore Academy of Illustration, the brainchild of three Baltimore artists and former adjuncts at MICA looking to help those with a flair for drawing to develop those skills and even channel them into a career. “We want to give people who haven’t had a chance in the arts a chance to make it as professionals, to step out in the world and be seen, to understand the direction they […]
