Entrepreneur Tze Cheng-Chun On Accidentally Disrupting The Art World

Often, when we find ourselves on the outside looking in, it can feel like we don’t belong—especially when we’re trying to break into an industry or profession that has an established circle of players. For entrepreneur and artist Tze Cheng-Chun, though, being an outsider in the art world gave her perspective and a market advantage. When Cheng-Chun took up an interest in art collecting, she realized she didn’t know where to start. (The traditional gallery system is very opaque—prices for art works are often not transparent, artist rosters lack diversity and much of the industry is tied to specific places and spaces, to name a few.) In her research, Cheng-Chun discovered there weren’t any galleries speaking to a digital market. So, in 2011, Cheng-Chun decided to solve the problem. She founded Uprise Art, an online art gallery, to reach a new generation of collectors. And, to her surprise, it actually worked. Although she first launched to friends and family, Uprise Art’s customer base and audience over the last seven years has steadily expanded.
