Making her mark: Former art student finds her passion in tattoo shop

By Ashley Wojtunik / Contributing Writer For Ruby Harris, inking a tattoo is an honor. It’s putting her art on someone else’s skin for all time. Harris started painting at the age of 18 and obtained a degree in art education. She has designed jewelry, sculpted, created stained glass, and ceramics, and has sold different pieces across the New England area. She has always been interested in getting involved with whatever the newest “art craze” was, so she made a transition to tattoos. “Art has always been my passion” said Harris, who owns and operates Ruby Red Ink located at 144 South Main St. in Acushnet. Among the most rewarding aspects of her work, Harris said, is when her craft can help others feel better about themselves or have more confidence. For instance some of her clients come in looking for a tattoo to cover or disguise a scar or blemish. Some customers, Harris said, were former cutters and want to get work done to improve or cover up their scars. Harris took one scar and turned it into a flower.
