New internet rules in Europe could ban memes. Why tho?

That’s the message European leaders are hearing from internet pioneers and free speech advocates so far on a set of strict rules that could potentially block or ban memes from being shared in the European internet. And the internet has also been responding in kind … with memes, of course. Specifically, according to reports , “Article 13” of the Directive of Copyright in the Digital Single Market Directive would require platforms like Google and Microsoft to install filters that block people from uploading copyrighted materials, like the “ distracted boyfriend ” image or the series of SpongeBob memes that make us all LOL. Sure, the proposed rules aim to protect the work of content creators — artists, journalists, authors, etc. — and make sure they’re fairly recognized for their work through copyright in the modern digital age. And, yes, memes are whimsical expressions of opinion and they’re often based on copyrighted materials, like the image of a character from a TV show or a movie.
