Public art: Sides of two Haverhill landmarks to become canvases for murals

HAVERHILL — No matter which direction you drive or walk on Washington Street, it will be hard to miss new public art murals that will soon adorn the sides of two historic buildings. One on the west side of the J.M. Lofts building is starting to take shape, while the other is planned for the east side of the Garibaldi Club building won’t be in place until sometime in November. The two murals have different themes and are being created by different groups. Artist Sarah C. Rutherford of Rochester, New York, will paint the J.M. Lofts mural as part of a national project called "Her Voice Carries," which spotlights women who work to lift up the voices of others. Rutherford began work on Monday and is expected to complete the project at 45 Washington St., in about two weeks or so. Sarah LoVasco and Hailey Moschella, co-owners of the Switchboard at 43 Washington St., are hosting the artist and are coordinating funding for the mural. Alexander Golob of Wellesley, who specializes in the creation of public art, is currently working inside his temporary studio at 90 Washington St. He’s creating more than 70, 4-by-4-foot panels that he will attach […]
