Will battle over Nazi-seized ‘Adam’ and ‘Eve’ be put to rest after Norton Simon Museum’s court victory?

(Courtesy photo) Norton Simon Museum leaders are hopeful a recent court decision means the decades-long journey that brought two Nazi-seized paintings to Pasadena has finally come to an end. But for Eric Simon, the grandson of the man for whom the museum is named, this week’s ruling isn’t exactly a victory. “The legal decision doesn’t change two basic facts: No. 1, that these paintings were forcibly seized by the Nazis, and No. 2, that these paintings continue to be displayed at the museum without the consent of the people who lost these paintings to the Nazis,” he said. “It doesn’t solve anything, as far as I’m concerned, in showing empathy.” Sign up for The Localist, our daily email newsletter with handpicked stories relevant to where you live.
