A New Report Says Traditional Galleries And Museums Continue To Fail Female Artists

Saatchi In Other Words and artnet News just launched a new collaborative report on female artist representation in 26 U.S. museums and the global art market, surveying over ten years of data from the period 2008 -2018. The findings? Despite increasing conversation about women in the arts and nation-wide campaigns aimed at raising awareness about working women artists, things aren’t really looking up for female artists when it comes to actual representation in galleries and money made by artists. Some of the significant findings were that 14% of all exhibitions were of work by female artists. 11% of all work acquired by institutions for permanent collections was by female artists. Growth of total auction value for female artists remains a small fraction of the overall art auction value with female artists making up only 2% at $4 billion. Within that 2%, it was found that market value is highly unevenly distributed between female artists. Artist Yayoi Kusama alone accounts for more than $500 million of the total $4 billion in total auction spending on female artists.
