A rare honor: Nashville dad and teen daughter both have art displayed in U.S. Capitol

(Photo: Submitted) The bespectacled and bright-eyed father walked with his two smiling young daughters through the hallowed halls of the U.S. Capitol. They passed activists, met lawmakers and caught glimpses of the historic portraits and sculptures that line the corridors and fill the chambers of the iconic building. It wasn’t the first time 17-year-old Mattie Ree Neal had been there with her Dad. In fact, she had made several visits as a young girl — always to see her father’s art work. A revered portrait artist who captures political history with a paintbrush , her dad, Michael Shane Neal, has five pieces on permanent display at the Capitol, including two of former U.S. Senator Bill Frist . Through his work, he has eaten fajitas with a supreme court justice and been photographed with former U.S. President George W.
