Artist Presents Whale Of A Show In Dennis

“If you start to tackle Moby-Dick, you get in a honey pot—and I’m there,” said Peter Michael Martin, the Mattapoisett artist with a studio in New Bedford whose interest in Moby-Dick began with a chance encounter that led to both a 2014 exhibit at the New Bedford Whaling Museum and a trip to Tokyo in 2015. Mr. Martin’s “Moby-Dick: Inspired Visions” is now on view at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. An opening reception for the show is planned for Saturday at 5:30 PM. The show represents Mr. Martin’s reactions to the novel and the feelings the book has inspired in him. With images both suspended from the ceiling and imbedded in the floor, the show literally covers the Hope/McClennen gallery space. The show consists of 24 large works, mostly bold, black-and-white cut-paper images that lean to the angular and the abstract. Coiled lines, dramatic facial features, a headstone and multiple images of whales, along with portraits of some of the book’s characters, make up the show.
