Ballard: Graphic design artist solves problems one business at a time

Fresh out of graphic design school in Alexandria, Minn., the Milbank native quickly set out looking for a steady paycheck with no real location in mind. He considered Minneapolis and Sioux Falls — metropolitan areas where jobs in the creative fields are more prevalent, especially for a recent graduate. Instead, when a position opened up at Midstates Inc. in Aberdeen, DeFea decided to take the leap. More than a decade later, not only is he still here, but he’s thriving. DeFea, 30, is the owner, designer, artist and sole employee behind Tommy D Creative. It’s a graphic design company he started in August of 2017, nearly eight years after learning and developing in the industry. The choice to go solo was a natural one for DeFea, but it wasn’t without its stresses.
