Calgary’s downtown sparkles with new light installation at Telus Sky

Mike Drew/Postmedia The downtown skyline shone brighter than usual Thursday night, as a dazzling new light installation was previewed at the Telus Sky building. This public work of art — created by Canadian innovator, artist and writer Douglas Coupland — is called Northern Lights and consists of LED lighting that hugs the window frames of the building. Thousands and thousands of lights, within hundreds of custom-made bulbs, comprise the fully programmable installation, spanning 160,000 square feet. “Northern Lights will draw in the public, in a similar way to a fireworks show . . . It has an amazing sense of real-time motion and energy, along with the buildup to a spectacular crescendo,” Coupland said earlier this year. And as he watched his artwork come to life Thursday night, Coupland said the beauty of the building had provided a perfect canvas.
