Chance meeting leads to Archibald Prize People’s Choice win

‘Tjuparntarri – women’s business’ by David Darcy has won the People’s Choice award in this year’s Archibald prize. Credit:Jenni Carter, Art Gallery of NSW Warakurna and Ngaanyatjarra elder Daisy Tjuparntarri Ward was born "naked in the bush" in the interior of Western Australia without even a birth certificate to mark her arrival. It took 10 years to convince government authorities to issue her a passport, and she is now a cultural and community liaison officer for regional WA schools and a passionate advocate against domestic violence. These roles artist David Darcy hid in the reflection of Ward’s eyes when he painted her vivid portrait, face smeared with modern oxide red and her chest bearing healing women’s colours. The strength and emotion visible in her gaze struck such a chord with visitors to the Art Gallery of NSW it was named the public’s favourite of this year’s Archibald Prize finalists. Darcy, a two-time Archibald Prize finalist, well-known photographer and published author before taking up painting full-time two years ago, takes home $3500 for his win.
