Cutter Gallery shutting its doors after 45 years in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES – The Cutter Gallery ‘s closing sale is underway, and Jo-an Smith, the first artist to have her works exhibited here, is also the last, with her paintings and jewelry on display at the western end of a spacious showroom. Glenn and Sally Cutter have been selling jewelry, antiques and art for 45 years, and before the sale had even begun, word they were closing had spread in the community, drawing phones calls and concerned visitors. Sally Cutter, diagnosed with cancer in January, has scaled back her presence at the store while she undergoes treatment. Glenn said, "A lot of people really like her, so they call and check." Yet two days before the closing sale began, Sally Cutter moved at a brisk pace as she gave a tour of their business on the corner of El Paseo Road and University Avenue. Cutter Gallery is in the 1906 home built by Hiram Hadley, the first leader of what would become New Mexico State University. The Cutters added a spacious two-story extension to the home during the 2000s, providing room for art exhibitions and a jewelry showroom along with offices, including the store’s online marketing operation.
