Don’t miss “Labor of Love” at the Detroit Institute of Art

An art piece from the "Labor of Love" display at the DIA The DIA, until July 7, 2019, is hosting a very unusual, special free exhibit. The fact that this is not by “old masters” but by two living artists, who are busily creating art as we speak, makes it extra special. Isabel and Ruben Toledo came to the US as political refugees from Cuba as children with their families. They met in school in New York City, fell in love and have been married and working together ever since, together but at different art forms. Isabel became a premier creator of one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories, all without patterns. You may have admired Michele Obama’s lace dress and coat at the first inauguration, which Isabel made. Ruben can draw anything, with one stroke, paints and makes sculptures. Together they created costumes and scenery for Broadway and other stage plays, earning many accolades. They are also famous for their effortless cooperation in most of their projects. This process is natural to them, as if the two were in one body.
