Form follows function at Jars of Dust ceramics studio in Virginia Beach

Mallorie Terranova has made a business of turning dust into functional art. Customers can see firsthand the creative transformation inside her studio and showroom, Jars of Dust. Opened in May in the ViBe Creative District, the 600-square-foot space features a handcrafted line of functional ceramics such as mugs, bowls, planters, dishes and ramekins. “The name Jars of Dust comes from the idea that all vessels begin as dust,” said Terranova, a Red Wing resident. “They are fragile, frail and fine but with the great potential to become stone.” Terranova fell in love with ceramics while majoring in studio art at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She needed an additional credit hour one semester and ended up enrolling in a ceramics class. It was her first time ever using clay. “Once I realized I was able to make something that also served a function in everyday life, I was hooked,” she said. “It was different from painting, photography or sculpture because it served a purpose.
