Graphic artist opens ZYNKA art gallery in Sharpsburg

When Jeff Jarzynka was growing up in Shaler, his family attended Mass at St. Mary’s in Sharpsburg, the church whose towering twin spires are a landmark that can be seen from Route 28. “We always went to whatever Mass fit our social schedule,” Mr. Jarzynka said. The new gallery owner, who lives in Highland Park, is a graphic designer and founding partner of Ideahaus, a South Side communications firm that he left back in the mid-1990s. But creativity and media have been part of his life for decades. Since his 20s, Mr. Jarzynka has collected drawings, prints and paintings. On trips to New York, Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco, he visited art galleries and regularly read gallery guides. Now 51, he has turned a Sharpsburg building that once housed a St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop into ZYNKA Gallery, which opens Saturday with a show called “CURRENT: The NOW of Art in Pittsburgh.” Seventeen artists are featured in the show, including sculptor Atticus Adams, painter Mia Tarducci and the Vanessa German, a painter, sculptor and spoken word artist.
