Group is turning human trafficking tattoos into symbols of triumph

ATLANTA (SBG) — A Georgia group is helping survivors of human trafficking turn the pain of their past into symbols of triumph, with a little assistance from tattoo artists. The work they’re doing covers up and alters tattoos, signs and scars inflicted upon survivors, using them to create works of art. Anyone who has gotten a tattoo knows that pain is part of the process. Along the way, the needle creates new wounds. But for survivors, it also helps to heal old ones. It’s amazing what art can do to liberate the women and men who have felt the chains of ownership and had them inked on their skin. The tattoos and marks placed on human trafficking victims are a daily reminder of their experience. Simple symbols or numbers, or even tattoos that say the words "property of," can carry permanent weight. Someone like Hulsey can’t erase the memories. But he can color over the dark experiences of the past. Photo: Atlanta Redemption Ink "Flowers help cover a lot of stuff. Flowers are also something that’s beautiful […]
