‘Public art will prevail’ — Saugus business says the town wants them to take down large mural

Coleman estimates he spent 20 hours per week, for at least six months, painting the large, colorful mural celebrating the history and landmarks of Route 1 that was installed Saturday on the facade of a Saugus business. Sadly, after all that hard work, he said, it took just a single visit from the town’s building commissioner to call for it to come down. On Monday, two days after the mural was unveiled at Cap World Truck Accessories, officials from Saugus arrived and told the company to get rid of the 90-foot-long mural, saying it violated the town’s sign bylaws. Andrew Scott, manager of Cap World, which has been on Route 1 for more than three decades, said the company merely wanted to replace the old, gray paint on the front of one of its buildings with something more lively. Taking a cue from surrounding communities that have added murals to the sides of buildings to spruce up neighborhoods, the company commissioned Coleman to create the large painting for the blank space.
