Allow me to borrow and paraphrase Alan Moore for the sake of a joke about EA’s continued botching of the Star Wars gaming franchise. Ahem: “Heard joke once: Game developer goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where microtransactions and premium currency rule. Doctor says, ‘Treatment is simple. Make a single-player Star Wars game without loot boxes. … Like that one Visceral Games was going to make before EA shut them down. That should pick you up.’ “Man bursts into tears. Says, ‘But doctor … I used to work for Visceral!’ ” Good joke. Everyone laugh. I mean, except for Visceral Games, the once and future Star Wars faithful to ever get a AAA-budget, single-player Star Wars game. They aren’t laughing because they were indeed shut down in late 2017 by Electronic Arts while in the midst of creating such a game, under the eye of Uncharted writer-director Amy Hennig.
