Street art thrives at Delaware businesses vying to draw eyes

William Bretzger/The News Journal A heart with a banner that says "Mom," a rose and an eagle with an American flag are among the many details spray painted across a fence on Capitol Trail near Ogletown. The tattoo-like designs contrast sharply with the white backdrop. For David Scott, the fence is a landmark that gives identity to his business beyond the sign that reads "American Art Tattoo" on the small house nearby. "Even for people that were not interested in tattoos, all you had to say was ‘the painted fence in Newark.’ Everybody knew what it was and where it was at," said Scott. That fence is an example of businesses supporting art that in other communities might constitute street art. Scott hired Derrick Noel, also known as Ease, to paint the fence last year.
