Harold Hanka, The Westerly Sun STONINGTON — Penny LaPietra Thorne bent over a tray of freshly-baked shortbread cookies in her tidy, eclectic bakery-kitchen on a recent afternoon last week thoughtfully decorating each one with an intricate, curly-cue design. "Sometimes I have a plan and sometimes I don’t," said Thorne as she squeezed the pastry bag full of frosting in swirling patterns. "This is fun for me." Thorne, a Westerly native, owns the Black Dahlia Baking Company on South Broad Street. She opened her small business last summer and, as the executive bakery chef, has been creating traditional and unusual baked goods for customers ever since. "I’m a one woman show," said a smiling Thorne, who is friendly, talkative and warm. "And I’m an artist too. I paint every day." Thorne, who also makes custom wedding cakes and plans to offer baking classes beginning in the new year, said she delights in a good challenge. […]
