(VIDEO) Local Man’s Paintings on Display at FC Library

Steve Gluz may see a photo of something that occurred before he was born, but he can paint it like it happened yesterday. Artist Steve Gluz depicts the rescue efforts of the Darr Mine following an explosion in 1907. Such is the case with the Darr Mine disaster at Van Meter, Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, near Smithton. It ranks as the worst coal mining disaster in Pennsylvanian history, according to Gluz, who lived years later in the vicinity of the mine. An inquiry carried out after the disaster determined that the blast was the result of miners carrying open lamps in an area cordoned off the previous day by the fire boss.
