‘Wow Factor’ Lures Immediate Buyer Of 19th Century French Painting That’s Been Unseen For 118 Years

Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839 – 1924) On the Terrace, Rolleboise Oil on canvas 22 x 18 3/4 inches Signed and inscribed Paris Painted circa 1900 Rehs Galleries, Inc., New York City Widely regarded for his elegant and serene depictions of exquisite young peasant women tending to lush landscapes, Daniel Ridgway Knight has magnetic draw in today’s market. “On The Terrace, Rolleboise,” a previously unknown painting by the expatriate plein-air painter who spent most of his career in France´┐╝, sold before it could be shown amid powerful demand for his work, said fine art dealer Howard Rehs, of Rehs Galleries, Inc. “I was not surprised it garnered so much attention since it had that ‘wow factor’ and I was very pleased to see that it sold so quickly,” Rehs said in an interview Monday. “Over the past couple of years, we have witnessed a lot more interest in great quality 19th-century French Academic art.
